Adoption of renewable energy : Eng.Obuile Morewame
• BIUST GOLD Sponsor to Engineers Forum 2019
renewable energy specialist who is a BIUST Alumni
addressed the just ended Engineers Forum held in
A Gaborone. Over 500 local Professional Engineers
came together with other engineers from Namibia,
Zambia, Mauritia, Croatia, Australia and South Africa.
BIUST sponsored this inaugural event as a Gold Sponsor to
demonstrate commitment to finding solutions to the nation
and produce graduates who are ready to solve challenges of
Engineering nature.
Eng. Morewame spoke on mitigation of climate change
through adoption of renewable energy technologies
towards green sustainable development. The impact of
climate change is already upon us e.g. rain patterns have
changed and crops are failing due to little or no rainfall as
well as natural disasters such as cyclone Dineo. Engineers
and Technology developers are somehow to blame for the
effects of climate change e.g. during the 1st industrial
revolution the invention of the steam engines, nuclear
bombs and power combustion engines had a very significant
effect on the environment.” said Eng Morewame.
Engineers pay more attention to their invention than the
impact of their inventions to the environment. This has
happened during the 1st industrial revolution and even
now it is happening. Possible solutions to these challenges
as suggested by the BIUST Alumni Eng Morewame are that:
Converting waste into energy as a way of solving the challenge
of climate change. Solar energy ventures are feasible since
Botswana has long hours of sunshine ,pyrolising used tires
to minimize waste ,production of charcoal from debushed
area. Engineers should provide solutions faced by our
communities not cause problem for communities .
